Getting a diagnosis of terminal illness is, as you can imagine, incredibly scary. It can also really shift people’s priorities.

This is the premise of a new Australian advertisement by UBank, which encourages people to care less about owning fancy houses and cars and more about living well and valuing their relationships. Their advice can resonate with anyone, even those who do not share their experience of terminal illness.

Six Australians shared their stories of being diagnosed with terminal illnesses and how that changed the way they view the world around them.

Karen, who has been living with cancer, told the Daily Mail, “I think if I was younger I wouldn’t go for the big bricks and mortar. I’d enjoy life. I’d go and smell the roses again. I’d take a trip overseas and go and see Australia…have fun with the kids.”

Ken, also diagnosed with cancer, asks, “Why would you live your life any other way than one in which you enjoy it? The more you’ve got the more you want. It’s almost a cliche. Those who have nothing are the happiest because they don’t know what they haven’t got.”

He continues, “Since I’m in this new situation it just makes it even more clear: Do it now. If the thought occurs to you, seize that thought and apply it then.”

Nicole’s advice is, “Don’t worry about anybody else’s perception of what is right. Just think about what you want to do and really feel confident with what you want to do. And have the guts to do it because anything is possible.”
